The Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre is a New Zealand Treasure - a dynamic indigenous company like no other.

With their extraordinary vitality, passion, strength and athleticism, combined with their own style of vocal chanting, Kahurangi has been thrilling audiences in New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, China, Canada and the United States with their unique blend of Maori song, dance and heritage.

The Hastings-based company employs outstanding young Maori composers and choreographers whose work in song, chant and haka - war dance - reflects the vibrancy and energy of the Ngati Kahungunu tribe carrying the listener and seer on a joyous and moving journey.

When Tama Huata founded the Kahurangi Dance Theatre in 1983, he aspired to create cultural, educational and employment opportunities for young Maori people in traditional performing arts.

The Kahurangi Maori Dance Company is celebrating 25 years in 2008.
