THEATRE IN EDUCATION

Suitable for ALL AGES Kahurangi Theatre in Education programs are 50 minutes in length plus a 10 minute Q&A session. We are happy to work around your school timetable.

CORPERATE SHOWS

Kahurangi are available for Corporate functions and hui with tailored packages available for your occasion.  Corporate specific performances are held in our repetoire for these events.

 

Kahurangi have been involved in powhiri and cultural occasions with the NZ Goverment involving high profile overseas dignitaries e.g. Hilary Clinton.  We have performed at numerous NZ Consulates around the world for over 25 years and are humbled to be recognised at this calibre for our level of professionalism and as ambassadors of our culture.

WORKSHOPS

Te Reo Kori is a basic Māori movement skills as defined in the physical education Ngā Toi Māori syllabus for schools.  A one hour hands-on-workshop students participate in Māori movement with the use of music and traditional implements.

CRUISE SHIPS

Get a little taste of culture and tradition as you voyage into the beautiful lands of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Kahurangi provides a quality hands on learning experience for passages as they take part in various 30 - 45 minute workshops spread out over their journey across the ditch. Please enquire about the various cultural shows that we have to choose from.

The Kahurangi Māori Dance Theatre was at the forefront of the renaissance of Māori Performing Arts. Formed in the early 1980’s by Tama Huata and a team who shared his vision to present Māori performing arts in a dynamic and contemporary manner, our touring teams have travelled the world promoting cultural understanding, and inviting audiences to participate in their programmes.

 

Kahurangi is a New Zealand treasure with extraordinary vitality, passion, strength and athleticism. They have thrilled audiences with their unique blend of Māori song, dance and heritage. The Company employees outstanding young Maori performers and graduates of the Takitimu Performing Arts School, (the first tertiary institution in New Zealand to offer a degree course in there traditional Māori performing arts) who reflect the energy of Ngāti Kahungunu carrying the listener on a journey of discovery and celebration.

 

The work of Kahurangi is distinctive, with each performance drawing its strength from full voice harmonies, dynamic choreography and passionate dance interpretation.​

Kahurangi is based in Hastings, New Zealand in the territory of the Ngāti Kahungunu tribe on the East Coast of the North Island. This tribe is the third largest and covers the second largest geographical region. Through a shared ancestry Ngāti Kahungunu can trace their roots to Hawaiki in the Marquesas Islands, Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and to four tribes in Northland, Tauranga, Gisborne and the South Island.

 

Their touring programmes annually incorporate USA, Canada, Asia, India, Australia and New Zealand with performances at festivals, schools, embassies and many official performances on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
